The FTCE General Knowledge Overview

The FTCE General Knowledge assesses prospective teachers’ abilities in reading, writing, math, and English language skills.

The General Knowledge Test consists of four subtests administered in the following order:

  • Essay - For the GK essay test, you will have 50 min to complete a clear, coherent essay that is grammatically correct and organized. A passing score for the essay is an 8 out of a possible 12. Two readers will grade your essay. Your goal is to get at least a 4 from essay grader #1 and a score of a 4 from essay grader #2.

  • English Language Skills - For the GK ELS test, you will have 40 min to complete approximately 40 multiple-choice questions on grammar and mechanics. These questions assess your ability to identify errors in sentences as well as rhetorical devices in passages. Typical grammar questions on the GK ELS test have to do with comma placement, subject-verb agreement, pronoun-antecedent agreement, commonly confused words (i.e. affect vs effect), misplaced modifiers, etc. Typical rhetorical questions will require you to identify parts of a passage necessary for the overall meaning in a passage. You also may be asked to order sentences in a passage.

  • Reading Subtest - For the GK reading test, you will have 55 min to complete approximately 40 multiple-choice questions that assess your comprehension of different reading passages. These passages can be single or double passages.

  • Mathematics Subtest - For the GK math test, you will have 1 hour and 40 min to complete approximately 45 multiple-choice questions. These problems will test your ability in:

    • number sense

    • concepts and operations

    • geometry and measurement

    • algebraic thinking and the coordinate plane

    • probability, statistics, and data interpretation

Frequently Asked Questions

Essay Frequently Asked Questions

  • I received a 6 on my GK essay. What does that mean?

    • That means one grader gave you a 3 and another grader gave you a 3. You did not pass because an 8 out of 12 is passing.

  • I received a 7 on my GK essay. Why didn’t I pass?

    • You did not pass because one grader gave you a 4 (passing), and one grader gave you a 3 (not passing). You need an 8 to pass.

  • What should I do to study for the GK essay?

  • What should I work on when practicing my GK essay?

    • Focus on structure, organization, and grammar. You can have a well-organized essay. However, if your essay is littered with grammatical errors, you won’t pass. A few errors are not going to keep you from passing, but do your best to keep your essay grammatically correct. Remember, there is no spell check on this exam; keep your vocab simple.

FTCE Study Plan Using the NavaED Book:

Our best advice to prospective teachers as they prepare for their certification exams is do NOT underestimate the FTCE General Knowledge Exam. Even though this exam is considered a "basic skills" assessment, the test is really difficult. If you are changing careers to be a teacher, the math section of the exam has concepts you probably haven't seen for 20 years, like slope, coordinate plane, inequalities, and functions. While older students used to diagram sentences growing up with grammar being taught explicitly in the classroom, many students today do not receive that kind of grammar instruction. That makes the ELS section of the exam pretty tough. Finally, the limited time for the reading and writing is a challenge for many of our students.

Passed my GKT mathematics and English language skills today. The math questions were similar to the ones in the NavaED study guide. I was able to complete my exams with time to spare.

I cannot recommend NavaED enough! I went to school for Communications and have had the dream of teaching for the last few years. I finally scheduled the tests and used library resources to study. After hours and hours of studying, I was still only barely passing the practice tests for the Professional Educator’s exam and the English Subject Area exam. I purchased the eBook for the Subject Area first and was amazed at the results! It was a much more palatable and compact study guide than the CliffsNotes version. I studied the guide and took both tests twice and passed with 15% more correct answers than on the CliffsNotes version of the practice tests. With this success in mind, I purchased the Professional Educator’s Exam study guide 2 days before the exam! I followed the same study technique. Finally, I went through all 4 practice tests between the two books notating why each answer was correct.

You will learn invaluable skills from the answer guide on HOW to answer questions. My sisters are both majoring in Education, and I will definitely be recommending the NavaED study guides when they’re ready to start testing!
