Are you preparing to take the Praxis Test?

There are a number of Praxis tests you will take if you’re seeking a professional teaching license in any one of the 40 states that use the Praxis tests for teacher certification. While certification and exam requirements vary from state to state, most prospective teachers take the Praxis Core Academic Skills for Educators Test, Principles of Learning and Teaching Test, and a subject area test (Praxis II).

The Praxis Core. This exam is like an ACT or SAT; it assesses reading comprehension, mathematics and writing (both grammar and essay).

The Praxis Principles of Learning Teaching. This exam tests your understanding of foundational principles and your ability to apply appropriate practices in the classroom.

Praxis II. These exams vary depending on the area in which you teach. For example, a 7th grade science teacher takes the Middle School Science test; a 12th grade Algebra II teacher takes the Mathematics Content Knowledge test. Subject area exams are often referred to as Praxis II tests because people take the Praxis Core (I) and then a subject area exam (II).

The Praxis Core

The Praxis Core is considered a basic skills test and is divided into 3 sections: reading, writing, and math.

Reading (5713) - You will have 85 min to complete 56 selected response questions on a variety of reading passages: short passages, long passages, double passages, and graphs and charts.

Writing (5723) - You will have 100 min to complete the entire writing test. It is 2 sections: a selected response section (multiple choice) and a constructed response section (essay).

Math (5733) - You will have 85 min to complete 56 selected response questions that assess a variety of math skills: number and quantity, algebra and geometry, and statistics and probability.

The NEW Praxis Core Math (5733)

The Praxis Core Math was recently changed form 5732 to 5733. The test was revised to better represent the skills teachers need to be successful in the classroom. The biggest change in the math was a reduction in algebra and geometry questions and an increase in statistics and probability questions. Most states have moved to the new test, but check with your state to be sure. We go over these changes and the overall structure of the Praxis Core math in this video.
